Primary Teacher

Located in the Westchester Community College – Valhalla: Under supervision, incumbent of this class is responsible for providing a stimulating, safe, and educational environment where children have the opportunity to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. Work may involve services to children in early childhood education, general education, or specialized setting. This is a professional teaching position, which requires the incumbent to interpret behavior and conflict in children in addition to structuring their activity. Supervision may be exercised over teacher assistants or aides. Does related work as required.

An Associate Degree in Early Childhood, Child Development, or related field and three years of experience working with children under the age of six.

Satisfactory completion of a Bachelor’s degree* in Early Childhood, Child Development, or related field may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to two (2) years of the required experience.

1. The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek.
2. Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.

Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
