Job Description

Located in the Law Department – White Plains: Under general supervision of the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorneys, incumbents of this class are responsible for highly specialized professional work in handling legal problems arising in the operation of the County government; act as trial counsel in the superior courts of the State; conduct appeals in the State and Federal appellate courts, and act as trial counsel in hearings involving technical problems. Although the County Attorney and the Deputy County Attorneys are available for direction, consultation, and advice, latitude is given for the exercise of independent judgment in assigned matters. Supervision may be exercised over a number of Assistant County Attorneys. Work is performed in an automated systems environment. Does related work as required.

Desired

Graduation from a school of law with an LL.B.* or J.D.* degree, and either six years of progressively responsible experience in the general practice of law or five years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of municipal law.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: This position is in the Litigation Bureau where candidates are desired to have admission to the United States District Court of the Southern District or capacity and willingness to become admitted to such Court within 6 months of attaining the position. In addition, a candidate for this position should have experience in casualty and estate Medicaid lien recovery in both the New York State Supreme and Surrogate’s Courts, as well as in Supplemental Needs Trusts and Guardianship proceedings pursuant to New York State Mental Hygiene Law Article 81 and New York State Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act Article 17-A. Candidates are also desired to have working knowledge of Medicaid Recovery statutes, the New York State Mental Hygiene Law and the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act.

Admission to the Bar of the State of New York.

  1. The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek.
  2. Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.

Special Notes

Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
