Job Description

Under general supervision, incumbents perform supervisory and technical functions involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a staffed wastewater pumping plant, a number of unstaffed plants or a combination of both.  Some plants have facilities for screening and grit removal.  General direction is received from the appointing authority but wide leeway is allowed for planning work methods and dealing with emergency conditions.  An incumbent may be responsible for maintaining pump stations, leachate and methane collection systems at the Croton Landfill.  Supervision is exercised over maintenance and labor employees. Does related work as required.

Required

High school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of either a water or wastewater pumping station; or a Class 3 or 4 wastewater treatment plant.

Special Requirements

  1. Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York will be required at time of appointment and maintain same while in the title.
  2. Depending on work assignment, must meet standards of OSHA regulation(s) 1910.132-140 - Personal Protective Equipment, and will be required to meet Federal, State and local standards with respect to health and safety while in the title.

Notes

  1. The plant class designation refers to the certification required for the plant’s chief operator based on the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation plant score. Class 3 refers to a plant score between 56 and 75 points. Class 4 refers to a plant score greater than 75 points.
  2. The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek.
  3. Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.

Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
